Mr. Luney's Fireside Chat

“You do realize…” Mr. Luney said in his signature, overly pompous voice, “that our ledgers would be correct were it not for the likes of you.” This belittling tone was to be expected, after all, Sleeves was always referred to as a “lesser than”. Therefore, he would be a fool to think this conversation would be in regards to any type of promotion. Even more foolish would be to expect the respect of his boss, Mr. Luney.

Sleeves held his tail in his hands, indicative of the nerves flowing through his body. Despite the regal, professional nature of Mr. Luney’s overall gait, there always seemed to be something… off about him. This made Sleeves clutch his tail all the more tightly.

“Yes, sir, please forgive me. You know…” he thought for a moment, trying to dig himself out, “I don’t believe I made that particular error in the first place. There has been a thief about, who I hear is a fantastic forger. You really couldn’t tell the diff—“

“Have a seat, Sleeves.” Luney drawled as he took his own near the fireplace. “We’ve much to discuss, do we not?”.  Sleeves fumbled up to a seated position in the large leather chair, looking only slightly clumsy doing so. Luney waved his hand, and a cup of tea seemingly appeared from the darkness. “I heard the thief was… ‘mousey’ in nature”, he continued. Luney’s eyes looked straight at his, with a glint of firelight in them. “You’ve heard the rumors, I trust?”

“Well, yes, sir,” Sleeves replied, picking up his hot tea in quivering hands. “Forgive my confusion, sir, but you refer to the thief as if he’s been caught, has he been apprehen—?”

A booming, hooting laughter interrupted him. Luney loved to interrupt.

“Apprehended… permanently, you might say”, his feathery finger gestured toward a skull on the mantle that appeared to be too polished to be old…

I must warn them… Sleeves remarked to himself.

Cora's Room- Cutaway Environment

I’m excited to share a project I worked on this past quarter from my Anatomy and Perspective class. It’s an environment that may or may not make its way to the comic!

The objective for this assignment was to create an “environmental cutaway environment” and had to include various easter eggs and objects to fill out the space.

Utilizing a 3-point perspective grid, it was like immersing myself in the Matrix while I worked. I feel a bit closer to Neo after taking this class. Now I see the world in perspective grids and vanishing points.

Dungeons & Drawings

This was for a project in Illustration class. I just had the idea to illustrate a bunch of elements from my favorite tabletop playing activity! I also made some totes using the pattern! These may be available in the future on the store!

Self Portrait

We had a “pre-quarter” assignment, requesting us to illustrate our current selves. This image ended up allowing me to skip a few courses in school!

I’m wearing a rebel pilots helmet becuase I’m CONSTANTLY thinking about Star Wars. There are also some shout outs to some of my favorite videogames, comics, and even someof my ideas for issue 4 of Manifest : Future.

Socks...

This was an illustration based on the general prompt of “Goblins”. I imagined a moody basement of some worn down house. All this particular little creature wants is a nice warm pair of socks, and it will stop at nothing to get a pair.

Process shots down below!

Commissioner

is clearly going through a rough time. Even her Tumblespeed can feel the twisting and moaning of its own metal peeling off. Still she remains stoic and calm, surpressing her inner damage in order to present the best version of herself.

While exhibiting at SDCC I was thinking of potential fans wanting an original piece, but not having the time or budget to request a commission. This got me thinking on how to sell a “custom” piece in a much quicker turnaround.

Simply by customizing/ filling in the speech bubbles, the personalization possibilities are endless!

Below you can see some of my process. From the rough sketch to quick color studies, and final linework.

DND: Fury Road

An image of my girlfriend Danielle and I done as characters from Mad Max. My car at the time was bit of a clunker, so I had it “welded” onto her Subaru. Sprinkled throughout are little references to artifacts of our relationship! Our cat Kaleo makes a guest appearance as well!

Friendship in a Tavern

Here’s an entry I submitted for a contest through ClipStudio Paint. The theme was “friendship” and my initial thought was that of when my friends and I meet up to play Dungeons and Dragons. I took a “sci-fi pirate” type of approach and also worked on some lighting techniques. I’d love to play D and D with some of these scallywags!

1988 : Part 2 Perspective

Continuing the series from “Groundhog Day : 1988”, I realized that an android focused on becoming human and contemplating the universe might realize that part of being human is to view situations from different perspectives.

1988: The Bout

The second in my series of robots that describes how many events are happening at the same moment in time. In the previous piece “Groundhog Day: 1988” the serene and pensive robot is a far cry from this very aggressive image of two robots mid battle. “The Bout: 1988” entirely digital rendering, 36 x 24.

1988: Groundhog Day

An original concept I created of an android seeing a shadow of something it desires to be.

Test Protocol

One of the prints I premiered at San Diego Comic Con 2019. This image came to me in a dream. A mysterious galactic being that soars through the course sand on an unknown planet. The abstract device allows her to speed through the landscape on her infinite journey into the galaxy.

SP1R1T- Illustration

This was one of the original concepts I created for one of my characters from my comic. Many of my characters start out as a rough concept that I sometimes kick around for months before refining them into their final forms!

ArtCrank 2014 Submission

A 4 color screen printed poster I submitted for the “ArtCrank 2014” poster show in Denver, with the theme requiring to be centered around cycling and bicycle culture. I was inspired to create this image as a response to experiencing someone being taken over by a completely new persona.

ArtCrank 2016

This is a screen printed poster I designed for an online poster showcase ARTCRANK. Each poster was required to be an edition of 30, inspired by bikes or bicycle culture, and utilize screen printing as the medium. This poster was up for a limited window for people to purchase online.

I was pondering my father and how relationships still last over distance. This idea inspired the idea of a father delivering an important gift to his son. Braving rain and the elements to go on this special Errand.

My dear friends at Killscreen Press helped me print this poster into reality!

Forgetfulness (Isolation)

I wanted to create a project that would allow me to experiment with a more traditional shading approach. Using older comics as influence, I produced this image made both traditionally and digitally. This actually ended up being my aesthetic springboard for a collaboration comic called “Look Alive: The Wanderer” which premiered at Denver Comic Con 2015.

Cave Crawler

A digital painting I created around the idea of an inseparable duo.

Head In The Clouds

A series of digital paintings I created. I wanted to challenge myself to draw the human form completely from memory, with no reference used. It is a series inspired by people who are oblivious to the life and relationships around them, and the cause and effect of that action.

Look Alive Comic Book

I wanted to see what it would be like to work with some close friends (who did the writing for this book) and have my role simplified into artist/ illustrator/ formatter. I also wanted to experiment with visuals and use classic comic book art with halftone shading as an inspiration for the aesthetic of this book. While I write and illustrate Manifest: Future, I wanted to change up the roles and use this approach on a brand new series. Below is the full 5 page “Issue zero” which we premiered at Denver Comic Con 2015.

Manifest: Future Issues 1+2

Below are a selection of pages from my 100% self produced comic book “Manifest: Future”. The story follows our hero Aco who is trying to find his future. However, in the sci-fi setting he occupies the future is literally manifested as a physical beast that you must find in order for your future to happen to you. // Both issue 1 and 2 are combined in this single comic book.

Manifest : Future Issue 3

The follow up to my self published and produced comic series, picking up moments after Issue 2, the third installment tells the story of how Aco (our main character) must overcome the pains from the past, in order for his future to commence. In his world time doesn't progress until your future, represented as a beast, is overcome and defeated. However, his recent actions have put him under the magnifier of a certain Deity that wishes him dead! // Here are a few excerpt pages. The full issue is 32 pages in full color, and is available in the store!

Manifest Future Issue 2: Comic Con Shirt Design

An Illustration I created to depict an event that happens in my self published comic book. This design was then printed as a t-shirt that was available at Denver Comic Con 2015.

Manifest : Future IV

A preview image I created to show the followers of the series a glimpse of what is to come. This character will play a crucial roll in the next issue. Stay tuned…

State of DK

Below are a series of variations on a self portrait I made for my Denver Comic Con profile. Most are references to various pop-culture imagery, such as Mad Max and Star Wars.

Planet A: Sci-Fi Landscape

This is a digital speed painting I created inspired by the video game “No Man’s Sky”. I’ve always been intrigued by the vastness of space, and how there are so many possibilities of life out there.
